Original Song: What Is Love?

original songMonth 90 of original song-a-month project. This one came together over a couple of cold Adelaide winter nights and is probably crying out for some more production work (I wonder if I will ever not say that about one of the songs I post here?!). I’ve been listening to quite a lot of jazz recently where the bass plays a prominent role, so the fact the bass is the only instrument that gets an interesting part here is not a surprise. I did cheat a little as I originally recorded the bass line using a jazz bass, but then converted it to midi and did a lot of manipulation to achieve a feel that I’m probably not good enough to get on my own! It’s not quite how I want it but as is so often the case with an original song here at The Cavan Project, close enough is good enough!

WHAT IS LOVE?
©2019 Chuck Smeeton

What is really love when you’ve been there many times
There are no rules to follow, can’t be defined by paradigms
Compromises of the past don’t have to stay the same|
Just know that the more you love, you’ll be better at the game

When love is really friendship that’s packaged up just right
That love is what you feel in the middle of the night
Love will change as you evolve, as you define the need
Love will truly grow, take the time to feed the seed

(Chorus)
What is love?
What is love?
What is love?
What is love?

Love is feeling something you really can’t explain
Love can bring great sorrow, love can bring great pain
But love’s reward, makes all the risk worth taking
As when a heart is aching, every rule’s worth breaking

Defining a connection so you don’t want anymore
Can’t foresee the ceiling, but can recognise the floor
A moment trapped in time, or circumstance, or fate
Do you take the leap, or will you be too late?

(Chorus)
What is love?
What is love?
What is love?
What is love?

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
