Original Song: Music For A Rainy Day

Song-a-monthMonth 87 of the song-a-month project is another that had challenges attached. While last month’s song was in the midst of packing to move, this month has been about getting setting up in my new home to actually record something. So, on Sunday the 31st, with things finally in place I started and finished the task. Music For A Rainy Day has indeed been written on a rainy day about a poster I unpacked the other day. I made this poster of album covers to capture all the music I was listening to at 16, and there’s a companion to it for music I was listening to at 32. There’s something about seeing artwork that conjures up great memories, particularly in these digital days where album covers are less relevant. I think there’s a lot more I could do with this one, but the deadline means it’ll just have to do for now until I get a chance at some point to play around with it. I’m certainly looking forward to April were I can get back into a more straightforward routine with this caper!

It started out as a simple task
Make a poster from my past
Of album sleeves that marked a time
When a song had touched me in its prime

A tapestry of sound
Inspiration I had found
When a picture tells the story
Of youth and joy and glory

(Chorus)
This is music for a rainy day
When I don’t know what to play
Music for a rainy day
When I don’t know what to play

A collage of emotion
Of passion and devotion
Ninety squares of memories
That brought me to my knees

Colours that ignite
The past and do excite
Shapes and fonts reveal
What the music made me feel

(Chorus)
This is music for a rainy day
When I don’t know what to play
Music for a rainy day
When I don’t know what to play

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
