Original Song: The Deed

Month 80 of original song-a-month project and a song that had to be squeezed out at the last moment! The Deed is an idea that’s been floating around for a while, but never brought to life. Recently I’ve been thinking more about writing songs for the Magnificent Companeros rather than as an indulgent expression of a personal project! Given the amazing improvisational skill of my colleagues, I’m trying to write with reasonably simple chord progressions, and leaving more space without lyrics (or at the very least not trying to cram so many works in!). Yep, I should have done a couple more takes with the vocals to get rid of those pitchy bits, and a solo wouldn’t have hurt either!! Instead, I look forward to seeing how this will work with the band!

THE DEED

I packed my bags last night, gathered all I’d need
Not much to my name, but enough to do the deed
Couldn’t put it off, it’s time to pay the rent
To finish off the mission on this journey I’ve been sent

I didn’t have to be there until about half past ten
But I caught the bus quite early, I don’t remember when
The city was still sound asleep, when I reached my destination
Grabbed a coffee, found a bench, filled with anticipation

(chorus)
It’s time to finish what I started
This ain’t no job for the faint hearted
Take the course that I have charted
It’s time to finish what I started

Watching strangers passing by, immersed in their own vision
I wasn’t much like them at all, this wasn’t my decision
When you’ve mixed it with the wrong crowd, there’s a price to pay
Sometimes there’s just one course no matter what you say

The minutes passed quite slowly, like water from a tap
Getting ever closer to spinning my own trap
No choices left to regret, just one thing left to do
All the months of planning, now’s the time to see it through

(chorus)
It’s time to finish what I started
This ain’t no job for the faint hearted
Take the course that I have charted
It’s time to finish what I started

I contemplate the future when this cloud will finally lift
And I’ll be free to move on, to make a change and shift
Disappear from view with a new identity
And the truth will be revealed for all of you to see

(chorus)
It’s time to finish what I started
This ain’t no job for the faint hearted
Take the course that I have charted
It’s time to finish what I started

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
