Original Song: I Am Crying

Month 97 of the original-song-a-month project, and one directly influenced by the bushfires we faced over December and January here in Australia. I quite like the way it has turned out by there were a few issues right at the end. A few of the lyrics were changed and I was going to re-record, but my computer died. Thankfully it was backed up to reinstall on a new machine, but I’m still trying to sort out the licenses on all my production plug-ins! I’ll get there eventually, but what you hear here isn’t exactly as it was sounding on the previous Mac! Once I’m all reconfigured I’ll try and have a crack at updating the music file, but until then this is all I have!

I AM CRYING
©2020 Chuck Smeeton

I’ve been thinking about the planet
Worried what the future holds
Questioning all the damage done
Wondering if we really could fold

Why can’t we see what’s right in front of us
Act on the science we’ve been told
The last chance for survival
Will my kids be able to grow old

(Chorus)
The fires are lit, they are burning
The ice retreats, had the warnings
Mass extinctions, earth is dying
I watch the news, I’m crying

Change has been a long time coming
Can’t ignore this any longer
Now we’re on the burning platform
Gotta own this to be stronger

Leaders frozen by their fears
Scared to lose, afraid to change
Don’t care ‘bout our kids tears
We must act to rearrange

(Chorus)
The fires are lit, they are burning
The ice retreats, had the warnings
Mass extinctions, earth is dying
I watch the news, I’m crying

(Bridge)
But the voice of change is growing louder
But its not coming from those in power
My hope lies in the next generation
To save us from eventual termination

(Chorus)
The fires are lit, they are burning
The ice retreats, had the warnings
Mass extinctions, earth is dying
I watch the news, I’m crying

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
