Original Song: Random Thoughts

random thoughtsAnd so to the 38th month in a row that I’ve been on this song-a-month caper! This one is a bit of a mash-up of lyrical ideas that had been floating around for a while – if you can make sense of it you’re a better person that me! The good thing is that by taking the pressure of the lyrics this month I got time to play around with some different sounds and effects on the song. The title Random Thoughts is very much a true reflection of this track – very random indeed.

The big thing for me musically with this song was finally working out how to use my Arturia synth again. When Garageband 10 came out I didn’t realise I would be able to use 32 bit plug-ins. I thought all was lost but then found an old backup of the previous version of Garageband. I can now go into that version and get synths all sorted out and then export them as mp3s to drop into the new Garageband. It’s a bit of a fiddle but it works. And I’m happy!

key: C major

C
You’ve grown your memory like a crop
Em
That you harvest once a year
A#
No safety net for any other day
F
No voice of reason in your ear

C
Coffee was the glue
E
That kept the fire alive
F
Darkness smashed right through the light
C
Nothing’s black or white

(chorus)
Dm
Random thoughts, random times
Am
Random words and random rhymes
Dm
Random falls, random climbs
G

Trapped between the womb and tomb
Can’t look forward, but won’t look back
One moment that I know is true
This is my only point of view

The metronome’s relentless,
Can’t change the pace, can’t slow the beat
Can’t turn it off, can’t take a rest
Roll onwards to the test

Time is very precious
So waste it wisely
There’s no hope, there’ no glory
There’s no real reason to tell this story

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
