Original Song: The Creative Stage

ThecreativestageGuess what? Finally a month when I won’t whinge about how hard it was coming up with a song! Yep, this one came together remarkably easily. Lyrics for The Creative Stage were nailed early in the month, but after starting a new job I hadn’t put any work into the music for a couple of weeks. That all swung into action this weekend – Saturday nailed a chord sequence and then the idea of making the song revolve around a bass line and some cellos fell into place. The result is a song that can send you to sleep in seconds!
Of course this also marks the 47th month of doing this project. The original goal when I started out was to get a year away. When I decided to keep going getting to 50 months in a row was the target. Now that it’s so close I’m not sure what the next goal might be… stay tuned.

THE CREATIVE STAGE

Dm
He sat alone in a coffee shop
Gm
A latte in his hand
Bb
Not far from home but might as well have been
A
A stranger in this land

Writing notes in his book
No one cared to stop and look
As he struggled with the words
To try and find a hook

(Chorus)

Dm
Pen and paper
C
A stark blank page
Dm
A mind that’s clear
F                       A
The creative stage

He took a walk down to the beach
On a sunny summer’s day
He thought the change would do some good
A change is good they say
But no ideas would flow
His brain just seemed so slow
Another wasted afternoon
Might as well just go

(Chorus)

Looking out across the lake
The joggers floating past
All alone with so many thoughts
How long could this last
Still struggling with the written word
Recalling conversations heard
Searching for a theme to test
Something not absurd

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
