Shuffle Aces: Weaves – One More

WeavesI’ve got a real thing for raw garage punk, and the discovery of Weaves made me happy! The track here, One More, is a relentless wall of reckless abandon that just hammers you. Weaves hail from Toronto and their sound is described on the record label as “art-damaged pop”. In just a couple of years they’ve captured quite a following and many magazines and websites are getting behind them, not least Rolling Stone who named them as an act to watch. Their debut EP came out in 2014, and a self-titled album came along in 2016.
Lead singer Jasmyn Burke has a distinctive style and the band (Morgan Waters on guitar, Zach Bines on bass and Spencer Cole on drums) are tight but loose at the same time. The last word goes to Waters: “We’re always trying to push ourselves,” says Waters, “sometimes it feels like bands aren’t necessary, like they’re not the one’s pushing music forward, so I think we’re trying to hopefully prove that bands aren’t boring. If we are going to be a band and if we are going to do this guitar, bass and drums thing then we might as well see how much we can fuck it up.” Bring it on.

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – including this one – on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
