Shuffle Aces: Squeeze – Black Coffee In Bed

Squeeze got a fair bit of press in the past month or so for their performance on The Andrew Marr Show on BBC1 where they performed their new song Cradle To The Grave in front of an audience including British Prime Minister David Cameron. The nice touch was their reworking of the third verse to have a crack at him around government policy. Not surprising really the smarts and sharp wit that the band has displayed over the years. The track I’m whacking up here is Black Coffee In Bed – a personal favourite that happened to come at my through Pandora the other day.

Squeeze is a fascinating group with the band’s founding members Chris Difford (guitar, vocals, lyrics) and Glenn Tilbrook (vocals, guitar, music) driving the process. Difford’s lyrics have been a constant source of inspiration for me over the years, but it also shows that teaming a great lyricist with a brilliant musician (Tilbrook) is the key for bring truly great songs to life.

Best thing you can do is listen to their best of compilation Singles 45 And Under to get a full picture of their craft. I also highly recommend checking out this fantastic documentary on the band from 2012 called Take Me I’m Yours. It’s long but so worth spending the time to get their inside story.
