Shuffle Aces: Frank Turner – Recovery

I was first made aware of Frank Turner by the 90 Percent Hits podcast when they discussed one of his songs – this one! Sitting in the car listening to it was one of those moments when you knew you’d discovered someone pretty special. Recovery is a great entry point for this artist, but as you dig around you realise there’s a lot more to him than this style.

Frank Turner is an English folk/punk singer-songwriter in the Billy Bragg style. Interestingly he started out as the vocalist in a post-hardcore band called Million Dead and only moved into his current genre when the band split in 2005. He now performs with a backing band called the Sleeping Souls. He has released five solo albums, two rarities compilation albums, one split album and five EPs, with the most recent one – Tape Deck Heart – coming out in 2013.

Some other cool stuff about Turner is the fact he went to school at Eton College with Prince William, and then was at the London School of Economics doing History. In 2004 he appeared on the BBC’s Celebrity Mastermind answering questions on Iron Maiden and came first – an interesting guy indeed! Check out this track, but also dig around to find more as it’s clever stuff well worth getting into.

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – including this one – on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
