Shuffle Aces: The Sheepdogs – The Way It Is
I first came across The Sheepdogs and The Way It Is while listening to the Sklar Brothers podcast. Now the Sklar Brothers are probably best known for their ESPN show The Cheap Seats that ran a few years ago, and their podcast is highly recommended for the same inane humour and commentary on sports and other things. Turns out they also directed the film clip for The Way It Is – and so another Shuffle Ace was discovered.
The Sheepdogs are a Canadian band from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, consisting of Ewan Currie on vocals and guitar, Leot Hanson on guitar, Ryan Gullen on bass and Sam Corbett on drums/percussion. They play a mix of American trad rock, country rock, southern boogie and barroom blues. They look the part – almost like a Monty Python lumberjack sketch – and obviously have a good sense of humour as this clip suggests!
On April 1, 2012, The Sheepdogs won three Juno Awards, Rock Album of the Year, Best New Group and Single of the Year for I Don’t Know (below).

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – including this one – on a Spotify playlist here.
Oh, and because I can’t help myself, here is the full Spelling Bee episode of Cheap Seats mentioned earlier. It’s long…but it’s really good!
Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
