Shuffle Aces: Just Abuse Me – Air Traffic

This week brought forth another blast from the past… I’ve always liked catching the TV show Later With Jools for the simple fact that mixed in with some big acts are a few emerging artists. Back in 2006 I caught an episode that featured Air Traffic – then a reasonably small band from Bournemouth in the UK. Now I’ve always enjoyed keyboards in rock, from the days when I, ahem, even found Rick Wakeman fascinating. As Just Abuse Me started I was intrigued, but when the band kicked in it really grabbed me. Add in the very cool piano solo, and I was sold. I hadn’t heard this for quite some time so when It popped up I went hunting for the YouTube clip. Happily, but hardly surprisingly, it was there and my day was good. Happy days…

The band announced they were “taking a break” back in September 2010 and I can’t find any references to them since then. The album released back in 2007, Fractured Life, remains their only release – and it’s well worth hunting down on a streaming service. I’d love to know what the band leader, pianist Chris Wall, is up to as he has obvious talent.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
