Original Song: Another Place

Month number 77 of the song-a-month project, and it’s been a tough one given my musical energies have all been around getting ready for The Magnificent Companeros gig we did on May 24 (which went very well, thank you for asking!). The lyrics for Another Place were written at the soundcheck for an Ed Kuepper and The Aints performance at the Marrickville Bowlo earlier in the month, so when it came time to roughly put some music together it made sense to have some horns (who feature prominently in Ed’s music). The version here is a single take so very rough, but I do think this one might enter the Magnificent Companeros setlist and get given the “treatment”. I’m really looking forward to seeing how it eventually turns out, but for the moment you’ll just have to do with the rough sketch demo!

ANOTHER PLACE
©2018 Chuck Smeeton

Never found the right time, never had the chance
Never stole a kiss, didn’t even steal a glance
Thought I’d be the only one left upon the shelf
That I would be that one who’s always by myself

Wondered if I’d missed the boat, let alone the train
When everyone was inside I’d be left out in the rain
I’d watched them all get married, watched them drift away
And no one even asked me if I ever felt okay

(Chorus)
And you can always be in another place
A vacant space
Disappear without a trace
Always be in another place
A vacant space
Disappear without a trace

There are people that you see in the most unlikely places
Life on the road is filled with so many different faces
But when that is your only form human interaction
It’s a hole that can’t be filled with more than just frustration

(Chorus)
And you can always be in another place
A vacant space
Disappear without a trace
Always be in another place
A vacant space
Disappear without a trace

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
