Original Song: Just Another Stage

I don’t know what it is about February that is so tough in the song-a-month scheme of things, but yet again I’ve come down to the wire in getting something out. Can the lack of three extra days really mean so much?! I was close to actually letting this one slide, but thankfully I took a good dose of HTFU and managed to get there – after 26 consecutive months of cranking out an original song it would have been crazy to break the streak!

Again I’ve turned to keyboards rather than guitars as the core for this one – it’s increasingly becoming an easier path to follow, and no doubt improving my very ordinary piano skills along the way! As has also become the norm, Garageband’s automatic drummer feature has allowed for a much better rhythm base to work from. Vocally I had some real issue though and for the first time in a long while I had to do many takes to try and get it right. Strangely it sounds almost okay through headphones, but still seems a bit off when played through speakers – so try and listen to it with headphones to avoid some pain!

Just Another Stage
© 2014 Chuck Smeeton

Sunday morning at 8.04
Along, as usual, by the lake shore
The tin roof rhythm of the last dew drops
The sun’s reflection dances once more

Handcuffed to a shadow
That tracks your every move
But a mind that’s free to solve it all
Nothing left to prove

(chorus)
Time floats away with pen in hand
Words tumble out across the page
This isn’t any more
Than just another stage

Cicada’s drone is the white noise
The warming of the day ahead
Ponder all of life’s strange twists
Thoughts emerge from a single thread

(chorus)

(bridge)

No voices to disturb the peace
The solitude is nice
Immersion in a vacuum
But it comes at a price

Cobweb across the path of choice
To give or chose to take
The first challenge of the day
Is fate a chance or a mistake

(chorus)

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
