10 Best Songs About Baseball

songs about baseballIt’s baseball playoffs time so it seems like a decent idea to look at a few baseball tracks. There’s a fair bit of “old time” stuff – and obviously the classics like “Take Me Out To The Ball Game”, but I’m more interested in songs by contemporary artists and songs with a bit more rock to them! From my all time favourite – the Dropkick Murphys’ Tessie to the Simpsons classic version of “Talkin’ Baseball” – here are a few of my top songs about baseball to keep you in the mood! Oh, go Red Sox!

1. “Tessie” by Dropkick Murphys
This song is a remake of a 1904 song that became the anthem for the Red Sox in their legendary 2004 run to a drought-breaking World Series win. It features backing vocals from Red Sox players Johnny Damon, Bronson Arroyo and Lenny DiNardo.

2. “All The Way” by Eddie Vedder
Vedder has been a lifelong Cubs fan and this song looks forward to the Cubs’ next World Series victory – which has been a long time coming!

3. “Cheap Seats” by Alabama
Alabama recorded this song in 1993 about going to minor-league games where it’s not about the stars, it’s about a love of the game.

4. “Talkin’ Baseball” by Terry Cashman/We’re Talkin’ Softball” from The Simpsons
The original folk track was written in 1981 by Cashman, but it’s the Simpsons version that most people know! It may have been adapted for softball, but at least the players are baseball legends!

5. “Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen
Taken from the “Born In The USA” album, Glory Days isn’t a pure baseball song but there’s a nice baseball reference.

6. “Centerfield” by John Fogerty
This song was honoured by the Baseball Hall of Fame for its 25th anniversary in 2010. It’s become a bit of a cliche but it’s still a decent song.

7. “All Future and No Past” by Craig Finn and the Baseball Project
The Baseball Project is a supergroup composed of Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Scott McCaughey, Steve Wynn and Linda Pitmon formed in 2007.

 8. “Joe DiMaggio Done It Again” by Billie Bragg and Wilco
Bragg and Wilco’s recording is pretty folky so it breaks my rule a bit – but at least they are more contemporary artists.

9. “Thome at the Plate” by The Whipkey Three
Not a well known one, but a song about an individual player is a nice touch!

10. “Catfish” by Joe Cocker
Dylan cut this track in 1975, but it wasn’t released until the Bootleg Series box in 1991. Another indidual player song, and some sweet guitar work. I can’t find a Dylan version, but this Cocker one is cool.
