Original Song: Back Where I Belong

Month 68 of the original song a month project. Back Where I Belong was something that I wrote a few weeks back, and this version was based on a quick take I did. Subsequently we’ve worked on an entirely different approach for a Magnificent Compañeros track, so there may well be two versions floating around eventually. Not much more to say really – hope you enjoy!

BACK WHERE I BELONG

A                                              Bm
I could have been arrested if what the music made me feel
A                                              Bm
Could have been put into words, for a big reveal
A                                              Bm
Touching places in my heart, turning dark to light
A                                              Bm
Where a sound can be the only path to personal insight

(Chorus)
Dm                              A
(Now I’m) Back where I belong
Dm                              A
(Now I’m) Back where I belong
F#m                                         E
You listen to the music but you never hear the song
Dm                              A
(Now I’m) Back where I belong

More than just a tune, this is music for a revolution
More that just some notes, no chance left for confusion
But that’s not just a line, that’s the whole damn poem
If you can’t explain your thoughts it’s a simple way to show them

(Chorus)
(Now I’m) Back where I belong
(Now I’m) Back where I belong
You listen to the music but you never hear the song
(Now I’m) Back where I belong

You need to love it more, not want more of it
It’s not about what is included, it’s about what you omit
Just one dial, turn it all the way, cut the low stuff, make it sparkle
Where too much of a good thing results in a debacle

(Chorus)
(Now I’m) Back where I belong
(Now I’m) Back where I belong
You listen to the music but you never hear the song
(Now I’m) Back where I belong

The art of listening, can’t feel what you can’t hear
The stirring of emotions can appease your greatest fear
You say you like Nick Drake, but you can’t tell me why
Can’t see the wood for the trees, it’s time to say goodbye

(Chorus)
(Now I’m) Back where I belong
(Now I’m) Back where I belong
You listen to the music but you never hear the song
(Now I’m) Back where I belong

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
