Shuffle Aces: McDonald and Giles – Turnham Green

A few weeks back my fellow Compañero Will put the McDonald and Giles album on – one that I’d never heard of. The first track amazed me, so it just had to go here in Shuffle Aces. There’s something about the complexity, yet also the simplicity. Brilliant musicians playing something simply beautiful. Now I have to say that the rest of the album doesn’t do it for me quite the same way, but Turnham Green is a flat out classic.

For those that don’t know, Ian McDonald and Michael Giles in released the album 1971. They were original members of King Crimson but left the band in 1969. This album was their only release together although the two of them have maintained fascinating musical careers. I’m afraid there aren’t official websites or social media accounts for the guys – this is an underground classic in all forms. It’s not even on iTunes or Spotify!

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – but sadly not this one – on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
