Shuffle Aces: Neno And The Jule Thief – Bad Things

The great thing about Soundcloud is when you happen to click on a song that randomly appears on your feed – and you are suddenly in audio heaven! This happened the other day when I’d gone looking for songs by searching a “tenor guitar” tag. One of the tracks that came up was this Neno And The Jule Thief track. Not sure why I clicked on it but I’m mighty glad I did as it’s a brilliant cover and shows that you can find awesome music in many places!

The song is their take on Bad Things from the True Blood soundtrack. I wasn’t aware of the Jace Everett version (but have subsequently had a listen – it’s a cool track), but the Neno And The Jule Thief is a wonderful example of a cover taking on its own identity. In particular, the sound of the “Chicago-tuned” tenor guitar is amazing (Chicago tuning is DGBE and is often used on a baritone ukulele).

Neno And The Jule Thief is Julia Fiebelkorn (vocals/melodica/kazoo) and Stephen Mooney (ukulele/vocals/kazoo) from Berlin and they perform a mix of jazz standards, rearrangements of pop songs, mash-ups and the occasional original. The harmonies are fantastic and there’s a real style to what they do. I’m looking forward to listening to more of their work – which you can find on their Soundcloud plage.

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – although I’m afraid not this one as it’s not available on Spotify – on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
