Original Song: The Birdie

45 months down and I’ve got a song that addresses my greatest frustration: I find it incredibly difficult to write a basic up-tempo rock song. You’d think it would be simple – and the end result here is anything but complicated – but for me it ain’t. It’s a very simple theme too. I’ve been playing a bit of golf in the past month or so after a long lay-off and it seemed only write to right about it, and I’m not too sure I’ve heard that many golf songs. I think keeping the lyric simple in The Birdie has helped in that is was easy to fit into a driving rhythm pattern. Nothing too much to really report on this one from the musical front, although this has been recorded on Logic X rather than my traditional Garageband approach. Hope you enjoy…

E                                      A
I’m standing on the tee
E                                      A
Brand new ball in hand
E                                      A
Dogleg over the ocean
E                                      A
It’s time to take a stand

Teed up nice and high
I want to catch the breeze
Shake off those demons now
Just swing the club with ease

(Chorus)
B                                    A
Can’t explain why it feels so right
B                                    A
Solid contact hit with all my might
B                                    A
All my chip shots hit the green and bite
B                                    A
No better feeling than…
E                                      A
Standing on the tee
E                                      A
Standing on the tee
E                                      A
Standing on the tee
E                                      A
Standing on the tee

Club head back and shoulders turn
Hips release and let it rip
Way out over water
Find that narrow green strip

150 to the pin
Danger sand is on the right
Settle in and get a read
Perfect contact, it takes flight

(Chorus)

Back edge of the green
Downhill to the hole
Nasty break from right to left
Just want a steady roll

Tracking right on line
It might be a little thin
Slowing down but rolling true
Hold my breath… It drops in

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can. As they say, creativity doesn’t need inspiration, it needs a deadline!
