Original Song: Racing In The Rain

Month 69 of the original song a month project. Racing In The Rain was a set of lyrics that I wrote early in the month but didn’t pursue. I had the chord progression but it still didn’t gel. Then, as is increasingly an integral part of my songwriting process, I happened to play it to my Magnificent Compañeros partner Will and he heard something in it (as he often does…like cellos and French horns!). So the recorded version here is what came from the one quick session we did with it. It will tighten up as we refine it, but it’s nice to sometimes see what a song looks like in its earliest stages.

(Repeated Em Bm7 C Bm7 chord progression)

It’s not dark yet but clouds are forming
The unexpected ways that this world is now transforming
We have your cause, no time to pause
The camel’s back is loaded up with straws

(Chorus)
Racing in the rain
Searching for some cover
Racing in the rain
Don’t know what I’ll discover
Racing in the rain
Searching for some cover
Racing in the rain
Don’t know what I’ll discover

It’s the slow waltz of the turtles
Gradually descending in ever smaller circles
A concept deeper than the sea
Now treated like the deity

(Chorus)
Racing in the rain
Searching for some cover
Racing in the rain
Don’t know what I’ll discover
Racing in the rain
Searching for some cover
Racing in the rain
Don’t know what I’ll discover

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
