Original Song: You Cannot Go Too Far

you cannot go too farTime to kick off 2015 with the 45th song in the original song a month project, You Cannot Go Too Far. Not surprisingly it’s another track with the lyrics coming from the motorbike adventure-riding world. As often happens with this process, what I’d originally planned with the sound and feel of the track changed several times through the recording process as I struggled to get what I wanted – if it doesn’t feel right quite quickly I’ll simply change my approach!

Musically, this is very much a keyboard and midi driven track – even the bass is midi (shock, horror!). The one thing is particularly enjoyed was creating the underlying keyboard track with two separate tracks. One of them alternates the root and third note of the relevant chord, while the other features the root and fifth of the chord. The idea was to try and create the basic feel of the chord but with a tonal and rhythmic twist. It hasn’t come out exactly as I’d thought it might, but I guess that part of the fun.

C
Why do we ride the endless road
Em
What are we searching for
A#
What answers do we hope to find
F
What’s really at the core

Is the journey one of finding
About what lies inside
Is the lure of open roads
Taking challenges in your stride

(Chorus)
C
You cannot go too slow
G
You cannot go too far
F
You cannot find the answer
C                  G
If you stay just where you are

The sharing of adventure
Whatever that may mean
The chance to shine a light
On what would have been unseen

The sense of senses firing
On all fronts as miles roll by
Of experiencing it all
Beneath the open sky

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
