Shuffle Aces: The Isotopes – Legend Of George Brett

K_Em_All_web_grandeLove punk, love baseball, so I love The Isotopes – or Isotopes Punk Rock Baseball Club to give them their full name. This Canadian punk band have a very cool shtick: all the songs are about baseball and baseball-related subjects! The name is an obvious play on the Springfield Isotopes minor league baseball team featured in the classic Simpsons episode, Homer At The Bat, from 1992. They’ve been around since 2007 but other than some singles and compilations, didn’t release their first full album until 2015. One of the other interesting things is that the band currently can’t tour the US as frontman Evan October was banned from the States for five years after getting busted for touring without a visa in 2013. October is the constant in the band as it features what is effectively a roster of musicians all with baseball-themed names like Dallas Duststorm, Vlad Zak, Trevor Uppercutz, Rad Jockstrap, Justin Safely, Tony Hustle, Rookie Rochelle, Andy A-Bomb, Dylan Dangerzone and Mikey Batcracks!

The songs are great – classic punk sounds and I like the fact the lyrics aren’t always obvious, which could grow a little tired after a while. It’s just very clever stuff. What’s more, it’s not just the music – the merchandise is awesome too! Check out the Legend Of George Brett and a few other tracks for some classic punk.

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – including this one – on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
