Shuffle Aces: Grace Potter and The Nocturnals – Nothing But The Water

grace potterI discovered this track when members of a band I’ve just started playing with recommended we give it a try. I’m sad to say that I hadn’t heard of Grace Potter until that moment – and I wish I’d discovered her earlier. Together with her band, The Nocturals, she produces some amazing blues rock with a funky feel. Her voice is amazing – powerful yet full of soul – and the exuberance with which she performs is awesome.

The track – Nothing But The Water – is performed in two parts. The first is a solo acapella that showcases her voice beautifully with a real spiritual lilt. It then morphs into a rollicking funky blues where her work on the Hammond B3 organ, together with the excellent musicianship of her bandmates (Matt Burr, Scott Tournet, Benny Yurco and Michael Libramento) makes for a fantastic uplifting track. I’ve subsequently been streaming all their albums on Spotify and their work is consistently wonderful. This is must listen stuff!

Sadly this track isn’t available on Spotify, but you can find all the other Shuffle Ace tracks on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
