Shuffle Aces: Brother Strut – Thinking Out Loud (Ed Sheeran Cover)
If ever there is a music video to make you smile, this is it. Captured making this Ed Sheeran cover of Thinking Out Loud, Brother Strut members Stevie Jones and Sam Tanner give off a joy that’s only rivalled by their amazing musicianship. I’d never heard of the band until stumbling across this video, but I’m so glad I did.
It was back in 2012 that sax player and producer Stevie Jones started the band by bringing together some top flight funk/soul/R&B musicians who had all achieved great success playing with artists like Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Sting, George Michael, Amy Winehouse and Madonna. Together with Jones are Steve Pearce (bass), Frankie Tontoh (drums), Otha Smith (electric guitar) and Sam Tanner (keys/lead vocals).
They’ve had a fair bit of success in the UK with their debut album – The First Strut Is The Deepest – getting to number two in the UK iTunes chart, and just about everything they do is incredible. Interestingly, the first album was funded by a great night on the black jack tables, so you know luck is on their side! Their YouTube channel features some great covers and originals, but what always marks their performances is not only the absolute skill they have, but the fun they are having. This is really happy and powerful stuff!
You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – including this one – on a Spotify playlist here.
Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
