Original Song: Saved By The Bell

saved by the bellMonth 65 of the original song a month project and a simple song inspired by a conversation I overheard bits of at a coffee shop: “That’s just as well you were saved by the bell!” Not too much more to say, and not even sure whether it’ll get the Magnificent Companero treatment to create a more complex version, but for now this is monthly submission!

Emaj7                                  Amaj7
Now you say it’s just as well
Emaj7                                  Amaj7
That time you were saved by the bell
Emaj7                                  Amaj7
Now you say it’s just as well
Emaj7                                  Amaj7
That time you were saved by the bell

Bm                                                      C#m
You couldn’t make this up he said beneath his breath
Bm                                                      C#m
And he told me the whole story of when he danced with death
Bm                                                      C#m
He dwelt on dreams, forget to live, but it’s where he is right now
Bm                                                      C#m                                             D
A twist of fate that came too late and you had to wonder how

(Chorus)
Now you say it’s just as well
That time you were saved by the bell
Now you say it’s just as well
That time you were saved by the bell

From the bottom of the barrel he’d lived a life just feral
Never took a chance in a landscape that’s just sterile
When he did reflect on it he found himself in peril
Held down by what he’d gathered, all of this apparel

And then he started wondering, if it really mattered
All those comments that you made, he was truly flattered
The hopes and dreams of youth now lie around him shattered
Nothing left to destroy, he’s broken and he’s battered

(Chorus)
Now you say it’s just as well
That time you were saved by the bell
Now you say it’s just as well
That time you were saved by the bell

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
