RockArt: Karim Rejeb – Perfect Holiday

While the song Perfect Holiday from Smile (a Spanish band headed up by surfer-singer-songwriter John Franks) is pretty cool, the reason this is getting a slot here is for the video that goes with it, which is awesome! Stop-motion animation is the kind of thing that takes an incredible amount of patience to do well, and my mind boggles at just how much work must have gone into creating this – and not just the technical skills but the creative process.

Karim Rejeb is the genius behind it. He was born in Holland but moved to France when still young, and it was at Hossegor that his passion for surfing and the ocean started. Always keen on art, he moved into stop-motion animation and is constantly looking for new ways to improve his process. In a nutshell the movie is made by manually shifting objects as little as 5mm at a time and then taking a still – and as many as 15 stills can make up a second of footage. In this clip he also finds ways to get the Lego surfer to take to the air, but he keeps his technique of how to achieve that a secret!

There’s also a long form version of the stop-motion film if you want to see where the Perfect Holiday clip was edited from.

Rejeb has also done some very cool stuff with motocross!
