Original Song: It Will Rain Today

rain todayThe start of the fifth year of doing my original-song-a-month-project has been pretty smooth. The lyrics for It Will Rain Today came together pretty quickly but I took forever to nail down the music side of things. What’s eventuated isn’t as refined as I would have hoped, but I do think there’s a framework there for something in the future. As seems to have been happening over the past few months, I’ve been playing around with midi tracks more than recording real instruments but I do enjoy the ability to write things that are more complicated than my ability to play live would allow. See what you think…

Don’t ever stop your dreaming
Even when you’re wide awake
You can’t miss what you’ve never known
The fleeting chance at the big break

And sometimes when you’re all alone
And your pulse is racing still
The promise of what might have been
A cup you cannot fill

So few can stand the glare of light
Let alone the dark of night
Don’t sabotage the chance to fight
Anger fuelled by rage and spite
For when the embers fade away
There’s nothing I can do to make you stay
Just be glad it will rain today
Silver lines in a sky that’s grey

Leave the light on, open the door
You thought you’d make it all the way
Absurd ideas of future past
Allow yourself one more cliche

It’s never worth the price you pay
And like the fool that will become
Those dreams will make it all okay
When you had thought you were the one

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
