Original Song: It’s A Job

And so to the 50th month of song-a-month stuff! It’s been an interesting month in that I’ve been mucking around with a couple of songs… and then I had an argument with a chainsaw which means no guitar/bass for a herm edwards rookiesfew weeks. Given one of the songs was heavily guitar based and I’d been planning on recording those parts this week, that song will just have to wait for another day. The other one, It’s A Job, is the one here. I’d been planning to re-record the guitar line before publishing it, but it’s close enough that I figured I might as well leave it as is. It’s been a while since the last time I did something like this (Bill On Red was a similar basketball-based track) so it was fun playing around with chopping up a vocal track and putting a few layers underneath it. The speech is from Herm Edwards, an NFL player and coach, at a rookie camp back in 2011 (you can find it on YouTube). He’s got a great way of talking and it felt right to play around with this approach.

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
