Original Song: Was It Worth It?

Was It Worth It?This is the second time I’ve written something off the back of a magazine article I’d read, and I’ve liked the results both times (A Lot Of Ways To Die In Alaska was the first). This time around it was a Sports Illustrated piece about a sports broadcaster that I found in their website archives – he’d seemingly been at the top of his game for all his career but behind the scenes things weren’t so good – a real case of was it worth it?

Musically and technically this was a pretty straight forward one – I’m back into using Garageband as really like how real the “automatic drummer” can be made to sound with a little tweaking. The rest is all keyboards using a variety of patches with my Arturia “The Factory” midi controller.

The picture that goes with it is interesting. Taken by my mate Phil Barker, I saw it come through his Instagram feed when I was working on the song but it was still an instrumental. I sent Phil the instrumental version and he agreed that I worked really nicely with the image. Of course I already had the lyrics in mind and had to see what it would sound like with them included. I’m still not sure what works best.

Bottom line is it’s nice to get the first song of 2014 out of the way so early!

One More For The Road

Tragedy is easy
And comedy is hard
But harder still is both at once
Permanently scarred

The ending is just wrong,
They must have switched the script
Kill the laugh track, fire the writer
Never was equipped

(chorus)
The greatest of all time
but still you have to ask
Was it worth it?
Was it worth it?

He lived “happily”
But lost his “ever after”
Separated way too soon
No more room for laughter

All the things he said
Now live upon a page
Memories of a better time
Memories of a stage

(chorus)

Tragedy is easy
And comedy is hard
But harder still is both at once
Permanently scarred

He lived “happily”
But lost his “ever after”
Separated way too soon
No more room for laughter

(chorus)

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
