Shuffle Aces: Water Liars – Sucker

Water LiarsWhen I first heard Sucker the other day I immediately felt a need to find out a bit more about the Water Liars – a band I’d never heard of. The song is simple but really well constructed and stuck with me for the rest of the day. To then discover that the band is yet another of the drum/guitar duos that have become cool made things a bit more interesting, although they aren’t averse to bringing in instrumental help or multi tracking in the studio.

Water Liars are Justin Kinkel-Schuster on guitar and Andrew Bryant on drums. They first met while touring and spent a weekend writing some songs that would eventually form the basis of their first album. They have subsequently released another couple – an album every year for three years is a pretty good output for a band that tours constantly – with Sucker from their album Wyoming. The songwriting is fantastic and the way Bryant’s backing vocals work in with Kinkel-Schuster is very cool – as indeed is Kinkel-Schuster’s voice itself.

The video here isn’t the cleanest but gives you a pretty good idea of their live performance verses the studio version in the Spotify link below. Well worth a listen.

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – including this one – on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
