Shuffle Aces: Scroobius Pip – The Struggle

Scroobius_Pip_on_stage,_2010I have no idea why I wasn’t aware of Scroobius Pip until the last couple of days – but I’m so pleased to have found him. Listening to the Sodajerker On Songwriting podcast with him was a real eye-opener, particularly when he talked about The Struggle. The idea behind the song is that many dream of what it would be like to be Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp, but what do Depp and Pitt dream of? When you’ve hit the heights, what are the things that drive you? That Pip decided to create a scenario where Depp is actually a serial killer is brilliantly weird, and the craft behind his lyrics – and indeed the pulsing music behind them – has meant this track has been on constant rotation ever since I heard it.

Pip’s background is fascinating, and quite honestly the best way to learn would be to listen to the Sodajerker podcast (which you can find here).

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
