Shuffle Aces: Man Man – Head On (Hold On To Your Heart)
Head On (Hold On To Your Heart) is another discover courtesy the Sklar Brothers podcast – this time it’s Man Man, an experimental band from Philadelphia. The centrepiece of the band is lead singer and lyricist Honus Honus. Honus generally plays piano but during gigs he plays a Rhodes Piano or a Nord Electro 3. The band also uses a bunch of unusual bunch of instruments that certainly keeps things interesting – as well as having a stage show that can sometimes be a little bizarre!
They’ve been around for a fair while and released their debut The Man in a Blue Turban with a Face back in October 2004, but didn’t really establish a profifle through touring until 2006 when they released their next album, Six Demon Bag. In 2007 Nike began airing a series of commercials starring Rainn Wilson with Man Man’s “10 lb Mustache” as the background music, and some of their songs were featured in the TV show Weeds. Their third album, Rabbit Habits, came in 2008, but their fourth release, Life Fantastic in May 2011, saw them change direction a little with a more thoughtful approach. Late last year they finished their latest album, On Oni Pond, with this song getting some success on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.
You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – although I’m afraid not this one as it’s not available on Spotify – on a Spotify playlist here.
Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
