Shuffle Aces: Fruit Bats – Ruminant Band

I can’t remember where I came across this one – probably via a podcast. Fruit Bats are an American folk-rock band out of Chicago that formed in 1991. They are more the product of singer/songwriter Eric D. Johnson than a consistent band, as Johnson has lots of line up changes. Johnson has also spent time playing with The Shins and also done a couple of film scores. This song, Ruminant Band, from the album of the same name is a cracker, and is a great example of his use of the right musicians on the right songs. The clip here has Johnson backed by a fictitious band but one that features the great guitarist Willie Chambers of The Chambers Brothers. Apparantly the band called it quits in 2013, but Johnson has recently reignited the ‘Bats so hopefully more good stuff to come. Not much more to say really – just a great track with some great musicians – and a slightly weird film clip!

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – including this one – on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
