Shuffle Aces: Fidlar – No Waves

Fidlar no wavesFidlar first entered my world when I was watching a surf video on YouTube that they had provided the music for. A quick Shazam and No Waves was added to my collection. There’s something about their raw surf/punk sound that I love – probably taking me back to my roots more than I know.

Fidlar was formed in Los Angeles by Max Kuehn and his brother Elvis and drew influences from So-Cal punks like Offspring and Blink-182. They also had their dad – he was the guitarist of T.S.O.L. – as someone who exposed them to early punk records. By their teens they were playing punk shows and soon after leaving school Zac Carper and Brandon Schwartzel joined them to form the band. True to their genre, they’ve taken a non-mainstream approach: starting a label themselves to release theuir stuff, doing a bunch of homemade videos etc. It’s all part of the ethos that the band name is an acronym for: Fuck it dog, life’s a risk!

Another track I really like is Max Can’t Surf.

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – including this one – on a Spotify playlist here.

Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
