Shuffle Aces: Darkside – Paper Trails
It’s a fascinating blend of Jaar’s brilliant producing and editing, with Harrington’s jazz influences. To try and put them in a genre bucket is a futile exercise as this is simply music that two very creative people come up with as a combined exercise in their backgrounds.
Their first release was a three-song self-titled EP – described by Sterogum as “dubbed-out jazzbo junkyard fuzz”. Darkside’s debut album Psychic was released on in late 2013 and continues to defy description. I love the way they wash so much sound over the strong beat, and Paper Trails is a great example. It’s the kind of thing that takes a few listening to fully appreciate but leaves you wanting more!

You can find all the Shuffle Ace tracks – although I’m afraid not this one as it’s not available on Spotify – on a Spotify playlist here.
Shuffle Aces is a series of posts that highlights a song of the week that “shuffling” has brought forth. With all the streaming services it’s not just an iPod on shuffle mode that we use to discover new stuff, but the principle remains the same: hit play and wait to see what gems come forth.
