RockArt: Bands That Never Existed

I’ve always been fascinated by design and iconography of rock – instantly recognizable art that so often pushes boundaries. Whether it’s a band logo, poster, t-shirt, album cover or photo, there are examples of truly clever and original design that have become icons. I’m going to start bringing some examples to The Cavan Project each week… but first something a little different with a look at bands that never existed!

Several years ago I had a great idea to create t-shirts for bands that never existed. Okay, so it wasn’t such a great idea, but it was fun playing around with Adobe Illustrator creating some logos.

It reminds me of a thing I saw online a couple of years ago where you could name your band, create an album name and pick an image using random searches. You can find it here, but the gist is as follows:

Go to Wikipedia and hit “random” and the first article you get is the name of your band. Then go to Random Quotations and the last four or five words of the very last quote of the page will be the title of your new album. Finally, go to Flickr and click Explore the Last Seven Days and the third picture, no matter what comes up, is the album cover!

I just did it and my new band is called Midas Blenny (a kind of fish that lives in the coral reefs from the Red Sea to Polynesia. The album is called “Like The Present, Only Longer” (from “The future is much like the present, only longer” – Dan Quisenberry) and the image for the cover is this gem by a bloke called Antonio Ysursa. Fun Stuff – and I can see Midas Blenny’s “Like The Present, Only Longer” getting some traction on the indie charts!

RockArt is a series of posts that looks at the non-musical side of things: videos, photos, logos and artwork. You can find more here.
