Original Song: Tell Me A Story

Month 95 of the original song-a-month project, and the first in what I plan to be a series of science songs. Working for an organisation that promotes all things STEM (The Royal Institution of Australia) exposes me to amazing science stories every day, and that’s got to be good fodder for songs! As usual I had the lyrics all sorted early in the month, but just never found the time to finish it off. I had originally planned this to be more of a rock/guitar track, but with an trip away looming I had to take the easier path of simple keyboard/drums arrangement. Still, I think it hangs together okay for now!

TELL ME A STORY

Science is a permanently unfinished line of work
But how to spread the word, is the challenge one can’t shirk
Universal resonance, communicate the finding
Look for evidence to make the case more binding

The collective enterprise of discoveries in science
But the skill of storytelling is the sole reliance
Establishing the facts, let the conclusion find itself
There are too many thesis that are left on the bookshelf

(Chorus)
Tell me a story, tell me what I need to know
Tell me the truth, give me the seed to sow
Tell me a story, tell me what I need to know
Tell me the truth, give me the seed to sow

(Bridge)
Does the story compromise the objectivity?
Make case to enhance with creativity
Don’t fall for the trap to dilute the activity
Just make a connection with the discovery

The job was to inform, not persuade the gathered few
Yet the responsibility of literacy was not what he knew
For leaving out the detail that does not advance the plot
And pre-established beliefs were the source of the rot

The key’s to find the truth in a rarified atmosphere
And scientific endeavor needs a voice that one can hear
From the confirmation bias to the gambler’s fallacy
Make the natural thought process less subjective and more clear

(Chorus)
Tell me a story, tell me what I need to know
Tell me the truth, give me the seed to sow
Tell me a story, tell me what I need to know
Tell me the truth, give me the seed to sow
