Original Song: Castaway

Getting month 63 of the original song a month project has taken a little time, even though I actually pulled the raw version of Castaway together quite early in the month. What the extra couple of weeks has allowed is for the track to be given the Compañero treatment by Will, and there’s some great touches he has added to the basic track we started with.  The song came about after Will and I were working on a Compañeros track that Will mistakenly called Castaway… but we figured it was a good name for a song so it was written and here it is!

CASTAWAY
© 2017 Chuck Smeeton

C                            Dm
Hanging on by a tattered string
C                            Dm
That’s tethered to a rusty ring
C                                                        G
Who would have thought it would come to this
F                           G
Left dangling over the abyss

Enveloped by the evening’s chill
Not a sound, the night so still
A parting shot, a sharp remark
Walking off into the dark

(chorus)
F                               C
I want to be a castaway
F                               C
Into the evening stagger
F                               C
I want to be a castaway
Dm                              G
Yet more cloak and dagger

It seems to me you’ve lost your grip
Once so steady, now you slip
I wonder when you broke the cast
That once we thought would last and last

Now’s the time to toe the line
What once was yours is truly mine
Now that we have finally parted
No remains just broken-hearted

(chorus)
I want to be a castaway
Into the evening stagger
I want to be a castaway
Yet more cloak and dagger

(Bridge)
Am                        Em
Here for you a bunch of flowers
Am                        Em
Hope they’ll last a few hours
Am                        Em
Another act that’s hard to swallow
F                            G
Can’t turn back can only follow

(Verse)
No more time for conversation
It only leads to aggravation
To my dismay, we went all the way
Left with one more lame cliché

(chorus)
I want to be a castaway
Into the evening stagger
I want to be a castaway
Yet more cloak and dagger
I want to be a castaway
I want to be a castaway
I want to be a castaway
Into the evening stagger

About the original songs
In January 2012 I commenced a goal of trying to write and record at least one song from scratch each month – sometimes it comes easily, sometimes it’s a real challenge, but I love the discipline it creates. I managed to complete the year, but it was so much fun that I’ve decided to keep it rolling for as long as I can.
